Biography


Drikus Volschenk is a South African actor best known for his role as Coen in Kyknet's Binneland.

Born in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, into an academic family and baptized out of a 1000 Pipers whisky glass, Drikus spent the first years of his life in Natal. When he was two they moved to South West Africa, where he grew up in a German Kindergarten in the Namib and later attended an Afrikaans Primary School in Windhoek. At age eleven they returned to South Africa (North West Province – Potchefstroom), where Drikus completed primary and high school, matriculating in 1997 with Honours of Distinction in Academics, Leadership, Arts and Culture, Music and Sport.

He enrolled at the University of Potchefstroom where he attained a degree in Business Communication, specialising in Art History, Graphic Design, Creative Writing and Tourism. He went on to complete an Honours Degree specialising in Audiovisual-, Mass-, Business- and New Media Communication, obtaining 13 distinctions and awarded Best Student in Communication Studies.

Drikus headed for London to save up to further his studies in Music and Drama. He initially worked as a security guard and later as a primary school teacher and private tutor to Gypsy children in the countryside and children with special needs. He studied Musical Theatre part time at the Guildford School of Acting.

After almost 3 years in the UK he returned to Johannesburg and enrolled at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance (AFDA) as a music student. He graduated as a screen actor with a nomination for Best Male actor in a lead role, an award for Best Short Film and performing in professional productions for television and stage.

He began his professional career as a freelance actor in August 2005 and since then has appeared in numerous television productions including Isidingo, Amalia, Binnelanders, Dit wat Stom is, Askies, When we were black, Begeertes, City Ses'la, Villa Rosa, Generations, The Lab, Jozi-H, Hard Copy, Scandal, Erfsondes, Egoli, 7de Laan, Riemvasmaak, Interrogation Room, 90 Plein Street, Pandjieswinkel-stories, Task Force, Skeem Saam, Swartwater and Rockville.

He has also acted in the feature films ‘Skin’ (with Sophie Okonedo) and ‘Long walk to freedom’ (with Idris Alba). Other film credits include the award winning films ‘Skoonheid’/‘Beauty’ (Cannes Film Festival and South Africa’s official entry for the 2012 Academy Awards) and ‘Durban Poison’ (2013 Winner – Durban International Film Festival) as well as ‘Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling’ and ‘Treurgrond’, both set for release in 2015.

He just did a guest appearance in the new Superman Film “Around the World” and is currently filming on the feature “Dis ek, Anna”. Drikus is also a senior lecturer in Screen Acting at the Oscar-winning South African film school (AFDA).
